Heavy rains lead to record steelhead run in Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan tribs

Snowmelt from a late storm and the wettest April on record – nearly 8 inches of rain the first two weeks alone – helped lure a massive run of rainbow trout into Lake Michigan tributaries this spring.
As of April 15, Green Bay recorded 7.88 inches of rain for the month, shattering the previous record set nearly a century earlier. The city officially ended the month at 8.56 inches. High, dirty water from all that rain and run-off kept fishing pressure and success down, while more fish reached the DNR’s Besadny Anadromous Fish Facility three miles west of the lake at Kewaunee.

Are jake decoys all they’re cracked up to be? Let’s talk about it

Let’s talk about that full-strut jake decoy you lug around the turkey woods.
When it works… holy hannah the video footage you get of gobblers spoiling for a fight! They come in at a trot with beards flying and the dust-up starts. You want to talk about a 20-pound bird throwing its weight around and what that looks like? You have all day to raise your gun or draw your bow and make the shot. It works. Sometimes.

Join a summer trap or skeet league to improve fall wingshooting

Thinking back to last hunting season, do the memories of birds missed number as many as the memories of birds bagged? If so, you’re not alone.
But do you wonder how to go about fixing that? Would you like help with your shooting technique without shelling out a minor fortune, and maybe have some fun in the process? Joining a summer trap or skeet league is probably just the ticket.

Ryan Rothstein: The gamble that saved my 2026 turkey season

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my turkey hunting career, it’s that you never know quite what you’re going to get. I’ve had years where turkey hunting seemed easy. This year was not one of those.
It was a year in which not much seemed to work. I tried almost every call in my vest. I called frequently. I called sparingly. I called loud. I called soft.

New habitat, public lands available northwest of metro in Minnesota

It has become increasingly rare for conservation groups to acquire public land for outdoor recreational use as you get closer to the Twin Cities metropolitan area. But that’s precisely what happened recently in Wright County, roughly 30 minutes north of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Nearly 400 additional acres – one state wildlife management area and one federal waterfowl production area (WPA) – were added to existing public lands and are now open for business.

Tom Pink: Sharptail hunters, landowners are happy with Michigan’s Hunting Access Program

I moved to the Upper Peninsula from southeast Michigan more than 40 years ago with the idea of staying for just four years until I finished my bachelor’s degree. I grew up hunting and fishing in the Lower Peninsula, and I was excited to spend some time in the wilds of the UP. (And to spend lots of time cracking my textbooks, of course.)
