Pennsylvania Game Commission says spring gobbler season outlook very good

History provides context on just how good Pennsylvania spring turkey hunters have had it lately.
During the state’s first spring turkey season in 1968, the total take was 1,636. Compare that to last year, when hunters harvested an estimated 42,543 birds. Not only was that the largest spring turkey harvest in the last five years, it wasn’t far off the all-time record of 44,639, set in 2009.

Battle over hunting, fishing license fees heating up in Michigan

A Michigan lawmaker who said he disagrees with DNR Director Scott Bowen on many things – including the belief the state’s hunters and anglers are eager to pay more for their licenses – is backing Bowen on one point.
Sportsmen should be more involved in what is happening at the State Capitol. On April 29, State Rep. Ken Borton, R-Gaylord, called for all stakeholders in Michigan’s outdoors “to be more engaged with the legislative process.”

Michigan DNR seeks tips about dead eagles in Delta County

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials are hoping someone can shed light on a recent series of deceased eagles in the Upper Peninsula’s Garden Peninsula – a piece of land that extends south from Delta County and is bordered by Big Bay de Noc to the west and Lake Michigan to the east.
Five bald eagles were found dead in a single area between April 3 and April 17.

Eaglet near Pittsburgh recovers from surgery to remove fishing hook

A bald eaglet from a nest at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh was recovering from surgery on April 18 to remove a fish hook from its gut.
While it took a collaborative effort by arborists, wildlife rehabilitators and a West Virginia veterinary team to pull off the risky operation, the raptor – then just two weeks old and weighing 2 pounds – came through with flying colors, and was returned to its parents.
