Steve Sarley: New ID law in Illinois has negative affect on fishing license sales

One reason that I love fishing more than any other sport is because fishing is free of entanglements with unions, attorneys, drug scandals and, most annoying of all, politics. Here at Outdoor News, we also work hard to steer clear of political beefs.
So I was surprised to get an email from a reader who is reporting that politics is raising its head into the world of fishing.

Three muskie hotspots to target during the early season

As friends John and Mike and I headed for our first spot on opening day of the 2025 northern Wisconsin muskie season, I spotted a boat ahead of us scooting toward the same shallow, weedy bay.
“Well, I guess we’ll start on the next spot,” I said, turning the boat to the right toward a steep shoreline that had some fallen trees and wooden docks in the shallows, and a line of weeds out deeper.

Mastering turkey hunting’s game of ‘let’s find each other’

You call and a gobble rings out. Quite a ways out, maybe 200 yards.
If you sit down right there and keep calling, there is a chance that tom will come all the way to you. But there is a much greater chance that you’ll still be sitting there when the sun goes down, all by yourself. This season, consider trying my favorite turkey-hunting game, called “let’s find each other.”

Minnesota 9-year-old harvests a top three tom in state’s record book

Nine-year-old Luella Malone has made it into the Minnesota record books by harvesting the state’s No. 3 overall turkey. The bird scored 90.88, five points above fourth place and one point behind second.
Luella harvested the turkey April 19, and a local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation verified the score on April 23. Scoring is based on weight, beard length, and spur length.

Mike Raykovicz: Are toms gobbling less than they did years ago?

I’ve hunted spring turkeys in New York and Pennsylvania ever since there was a season.
Pennsylvania’s first spring gobbler hunting season was held in 1968 and it was a short one. It ran from May 6 to May 11, following a period where the state’s wild turkey population had recovered enough to support a spring hunt. New York State’s first spring turkey season was held a year or two later in Southern Tier counties and it was introduced after the state’s turkey population was restored.
