On April 21, the New York State Assembly’s Environmental Conservation Committee approved (reported) A10633/S09462. The bill, if passed, will permit DEC to expand the ability to issue antlerless deer permits in the Northern Zone.
DEC has been issuing DMPs in portions of Region 6, the western half of the Northern Zone, for some time. But without authorization from the state legislature, it can’t do the same in Region 5, which is the eastern portion of the Northern Zone.
The local DNR fisheries crew ran a fish survey on Chippewa County’s Otter Lake in 2023. They found the walleye population doing well overall, despite drop in abundance compared to the 2018 survey.

I really enjoy this time of year but not for what you might think. Sure, there are thousands of birds landing in the northland each night. Huge flocks of snow geese are pushing northward.
