When turkeys break flocks, hunters better be ready

Flocked turkeys use their many sets of eyes to scan for potential danger. So, when hens and gobblers break out from their wintertime flocks, spring turkey hunters must be ready to pounce on a golden opportunity to zero in on an individual bird. That starts with preparation and scouting, which is typically a major activity in the month of March for Ohio’s legion of spring turkey hunters. (Photo by Bob “Greenie” Grewell)

I studied a small flock of hen turkeys feeding across an eastern Ohio grassy field.
At any given time, at least one hen had its head up to scan the surrounding landscape. I assumed they were searching for potential predators because turkeys are always watchful. And, many sets of eyes provide more opportunities to survive. What an inspiring sight for any turkey hunter.
