Jack Ammerman: March is the time for coyote hunters to whimper, not scream

Michigan’s changes to its coyote hunting and trapping season just arrived earlier this month.
After being pressured to close the season to hunters and trappers by those who wanted to see the predators have a chance to raise litters, constant pressure by the hunting and trapping community – especially the deer hunters – led to a “new” management/nuisance season being put in place.

Steve McComas: Invasive species have been invading Minnesota lakes for centuries

Before retreating 14,000 to 10,000 years ago, glaciers covered nearly all of Minnesota except for the Driftless Area, in the southeastern corner of the state. Many Minnesota lakes were formed in depressions created by ice blocks that were left behind. When the ice blocks melted, water filled the depressions and lakes were formed.
For a brief period, there were no aquatic plants nor fish in these water bodies.

Wisconsin Deer Hunters, Inc., looking for new chapters

A Wisconsin group that wants to promote deer hunting and outdoors-related activities is looking for new members and new chapters.
Chuck Dallas, of Shawano, is president of the Wisconsin Deer Hunters, Inc., Board of Directors and is past-president of the group’s Shawano chapter.
“The old-timers, when they created this thing in 1988, they were all involved in Whitetails Unlimited, wild turkeys and all that,” he said. “They were disappointed that they would work really hard as volunteers at these banquets and see the money leave the community.”

Mike Raykovicz: Spring is near after a cold winter in New York

Well, Spring is here, almost. With the cold weather we’ve had in New York this past month, I have to admit I haven’t done much. Last summer, I thought I had cut and stacked enough firewood to get me through the winter, and I just about made it.
Early February featured near-zero-degree temperatures throughout much of New York, and my little wood-burning stove demanded almost all of my split red oak and ash. No complaints here.

Shed hunting season comes with some added bonuses

If this time of year has you yearning for spring so you can get outdoors as the first fish of open water angling season begin to bite, there is no reason to sit around and wait for the water temperatures to rise if you find yourself itching to get outdoors amidst a severe case of cabin fever.
If you are a deer hunter, there can sometimes be no better feeling than knowing the big buck that eluded you last fall is still alive and kicking, giving you renewed hope of wrapping your tag around his leg this fall.
