On a recent February Sunday, while most Americans were gathering piles of unhealthy snacks and choosing a seat to watch the Big Game, Fred Nickel, a beagle named Rufus and I cruised eastern Wisconsin backroads looking for “rabbitat.”
Four-year-old Rufus is the latest in a long line of beagles Nickel has owned since his farm-boy days in Horicon. He even gave his girlfriend (now wife), Rita, a beagle pup as a high-school graduation present. They have had beagles ever since.
