Proposal would up the cost of hunting, fishing licenses in Michigan

Will Michigan’s hunters and anglers face a higher tab for doing what they enjoy doing most?
The question involves a staple of many wallets: the sturdy $5 bill. There are upsides and downsides to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s state budget proposal that would increase the cost of hunting, fishing and boating license fees. The changes would affect all license fees, though they would hit nonresident sportsmen a bit harder.

County-by-county debate over shotgun zone for deer hunting takes center stage in Minnesota

Public forums are being held in many counties across central and southern Minnesota right now as county board members hear from constituents regarding the use of rifles for deer hunting in what were previously shotgun zones.
It’s a safe bet that some of those meetings have been more contentious than what took place in Alexandria on the evening of Feb. 18. The five Douglas County commissioners did not vote on the issue, but what they heard from the more than 20 people who spoke was overwhelming support of implementing rifles for deer hunting county-wide.

Long-time Minnesota DNR naturalist settles in as coordinator for Becoming an Outdoors Woman

Last summer, when longtime Becoming an Outdoors Woman Coordinator Linda Bylander retired, experienced DNR state park naturalist Linda Radimecky stepped into the role. She says it has felt like a natural fit.
“I taught a lot of fly-fishing classes and knot-tying classes, and survival kind of stuff, so I knew the programming for a long time,” Radimecky said.

Steve Piatt: In search of ‘the lights’

On this Monday night, I’m settled into the recliner, with the wood stove hissing, temperatures outside in the teens and dropping, watching Indiana and Miami battle it out for college football’s national championship.
My wife, Paula, has other plans, and has left the house to drive up the road a mile or so, away from our home and others in the neighborhood, seeking total darkness, or something close to it. “The lights” may be happening tonight.

Ohio’s inland ice starting to fade after one of best seasons in recent memory

It’s been the Super Bowl for Ohio ice anglers on north central Ohio’s Indian Lake this winter.
And, places other than Indian have seen their fair share of ice fishermen, too. Saugeyes have been coming through the hardwater holes with some regularity over the past couple of weeks on Indian Lake in Logan County.
