Commentary: Theodore Roosevelt’s descendants urge U.S. senators to protect the Boundary Waters

The purpose of this letter is to strongly recommend all senators vote against H.J. Res. 140, to ask you to work with President Trump to seek ways to permanently protect the Boundary Waters, and to send a unified message that America is still a land that relentlessly protects its greatest wilderness terrain.

Spring light goose orders kicking off in the Upper Midwest; here’s what conditions look like

Even several years after his first spring snow goose hunt, Scott Doheny of New Prague, Minn., takes pleasure in recalling the details.
“We found a huge mass of feeding birds my first morning and set ourselves up to pass-shoot them,” said Doheny, an avid waterfowl hunter. “The fog that morning was thick, with very little breeze. I remember getting out of my truck and hearing them get up and start to peel off from the roost. It was deafening.”

Indiana DNR busts poachers in first case since drone recovery legalized in the state

Indiana DNR officials reported that the agency is prosecuting its first drone poaching case since the recovery of game with drones was legalized in March of 2024.
It remains illegal in Indiana to use drones to search for, scout, or detect deer during the hunting season or for 14 days prior.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: New York’s Niagara Fishing Expo ‘teaches fishing’

For the better part of 35 years, I attended sport, travel and outdoor shows throughout the northeast from January through April. It was the heyday of these kinds of shows, attracting people from far and wide.

Included among these were nine day shows in Harrisburg (still the biggest of its kind in the country), Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago and Indianapolis. Other shows that stood out for sheer numbers of people were the World Fishing and Outdoor Expo in Suffern, N.Y. and the Pittsburgh Expo in Monroeville. With all this trade show experience, not one could compare to the impressive number of seminars and clinics at the Greater Niagara Fishing Expo in Niagara Falls.

No plans to reintroduce wolves or cougars under Illinois Rewilding Law; wetland protection expected to benefit

As sweeping changes to the federal Clean Water Act in recent years have weakened protections for wetlands, Illinois has become the first state in the nation to officially recognize a conservation tactic known as rewilding.
The Rewilding Law, which does not mandate any specific actions, affirms the state’s authority to protect, manage and conserve natural resources and wildlife, said DNR in a statement to the Chicago Tribune.
