Steve Carney: Fishing in comfort, and auger blade screw insurance

It’s hard to believe, but I hadn’t until recently fished from inside a wheelhouse.
But finally, I had an opportunity to sample the wheelhouse lifestyle, and I must say, it is unique. A buddy invited me to fish with him from his wheelhouse on a cold, minus-10 evening. When I arrived, it was already set up and we were ready to fish.

Commentary: Fight back against legislation that threatens Minnesota’s Boundary Waters

Legislation concerning to regional sportsmen introduced by Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minn., 8th) passed the House of Representatives last week. H.J. 140 is a bill that seeks to undo a 20-year mining moratorium in the Rainy River Watershed, upstream from the Boundary Waters.
This move came after years of pressure from Rep. Stauber to permit a sulfide-ore copper mine proposed by Twin Metals Minnesota near the shores of Birch Lake, between Ely and Babbitt.

“This is work that I’m passionate about and that’s really what’s driven me here,” Smitten said.

Ohio’s steelhead fishing hasn’t been great, but brighter days may be ahead

Steelhead fishing in the northeast Ohio Lake Erie tributaries isn’t off-the-charts good at the moment, but things should improve down the road a bit.
That’s the short synopsis of a recent conversation Ohio Outdoor News had with Curt Wagner, fish management supervisor for the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife in the region.

Tom Venesky: It’s time to update Pennsylvania’s deer-tagging rule

With all the talk recently about antiquated laws and regulations, one of the most obvious is often overlooked.
For some reason, harvested deer in Pennsylvania can only be tagged in the ear and nowhere else. It’s been that way for a long time, and it’s a requirement that hunters grumble about often. Personally, I really don’t like the idea of slicing the ear to tag a deer.

These tips can put you safely on ice during Ohio’s sometimes brief window of angling opportunity

This winter has been quite generous in Ohio with colder temps and the availability of ice for those who enjoy my favorite winter activity. Ice fishing is in full-swing, and with that, comes the fun, bounties, and dangers that accompany it.
