Backyard and Beyond: Food theft for young eagle

Heading recently for open water on a tributary to the Mississippi River, Scott Thiede carried his blind, chair, camera, and some raw poultry to an ice shelf.
This is an area that hosts bald eagles all winter and two immature eagles soon landed to eat the chicken. An adult eagle suddenly made a swift pass and snatched some chicken meat with its sharp talons, much to the dismay of one of the youngsters.

‘Runaway’ muskies regularly returned to Busse Lake in Illinois

Every year, muskies slip over the dam on Busse Lake’s southeast corner and drift into the narrow flow of Salt Creek. If no one intervened, many would continue downstream through DuPage County, eventually disappearing into the Des Plaines River.
This is why, twice each year, the Forest Preserves of Cook County’s fisheries team launches its muskie salvage operation, working in partnership with the Illinois DNR to keep the powerful muskies in the lake.

Moving the Oct. 31 Lake Winnebago sturgeon spearing license deadline closer to the February season date could end up increasing the cost of the $20 tag by three, four or even five times.
