A quick chat with Dr. Brooke Bateman on leading the iconic Christmas Bird Count

The sights and sounds of her childhood still resonate with Dr. Brooke Bateman.
Birds can do that.
“When I visited my Nana (grandmother) in northern Wisconsin, she always took the time to point out all the birds and help me identify them. I recall spending entire days sitting next to her in her older years, watching birds with her at her feeder in Wisconsin.”

Minnesota’s muzzleloader deer harvest up 7% from year ago

After this year’s Minnesota muzzleloader deer-hunting season wrapped up Sunday, Dec. 14, preliminary harvest for that season totaled 9,216 deer – a 7% increase over last year’s blackpowder season.
At the same time, the total harvest for all deer-hunting seasons has pushed past the 181,000 mark, more than 10,000 more than a year ago.

Trump administration delays decision on federal protections for monarch butterflies

President Donald Trump’s administration has delayed a decision on whether to extend federal protections to monarch butterflies indefinitely despite years of warnings from conservationists that populations are shrinking.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced during the waning days of then-President Joe Biden’s term in December 2024 that the agency planned to add the backyard pollinator to the threatened species list by the end of 2025, calling the insect “iconic” and “cherished across North America.”

Tom Venesky: Should laws be changed in regard to deer drives in Pennsylvania?

Deer drives always made me uneasy. I’ve participated in plenty, and admit it can be a fun way to hunt. But no matter how fast-paced the action was, the risk was always inherent. And obvious.
When you have a group of “drivers” moving through the woods directly toward a line of “standers,” with deer in between, it goes against every standard of safety.

Great Lakes bobcats make a comeback; what opportunities exist for hunters, trappers?

Bobcats, because of their shy, reclusive behavior, cause many people to think they’re a rare wildlife species, although when wildlife agencies throughout the northern tier of states evaluate their status, they’re finding bobcats are thriving.
Being habitat generalists, they can occupy a wide range of habitats from rural to suburban areas. Throughout the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region, population densities vary, but overall their population is better than it’s been in decades.

Michigan hunters will have the option of using e-tags in 2026

In an increasingly digital world – one of email, evites, and ecommerce – the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is planning to allow hunters to tag their deer with e-kill tags beginning in 2026.
The e-tagging system is designed to make life a little easier for hunters who purchase licenses via the Internet. Currently, hunters who buy their licenses electronically are mailed appropriate tags for attaching to their animals.
