Strikemaster Lazer Mag: An ice auger’s rise – or decline? – to stardom

I recall clearly the year 1998.
It was during ’98 that I received as a Christmas gift from my now dearly-departed (not dead, just departed) ex-wife. It was my first and, to date, my only ice auger. We were living in a small town in a portion of a big house that served as a triplex.

George Meyer, longtime advocate for Wisconsin’s natural resources, facing his latest battle head-on

He was the right man, at the right place, at the right time.
He is George Meyer, past-secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and retired executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation. Meyer, 78, has been fighting an unusual PSA negative metastatic prostate cancer for the past year, and since November has been treated through hospice.

Is an ice-fishing season on its way for Ohio anglers? Here are some best bets for first ice

Are we going to get some ice this winter fishing season in Ohio? It is starting to look that way. The ocean wind and temperature occurring over the central and eastern Pacific Ocean encouraged forecasters to announce a weak La Nina. This forecast has led to above average precipitation in the past.
What matters to me, when Pacific water cools to below average temperatures, is whether the La Nina conditions will weaken the jet stream. A strong jet stream separates Arctic air from the Ohio Valley. A weakened jet stream can wobble, increasing the potential for harsh weather.

Steve Piatt: Are all-day sits worth it? Sometimes, hunting hurts a bit

There’s a certain level of discomfort, even pain, involved in deer hunting, and there’s really no way of avoiding it if you spend any serious time in pursuit of a whitetail.
You essentially have to consent to it, expect it and even embrace it. That becomes a bit harder as we age, especially when it comes to the elements. So I knew this all-day sit was going to be painful as I ascended my treestand on a snowy, chilly morning in Albany Township, Bradford County, Pa.

Lake Erie laker spawning grounds improved in New York

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the completion of an experimental aquatic habitat reclamation project on Brocton Shoal in Lake Erie.
The project involved a groundbreaking high-velocity jetting method, which was developed to clean and restore historical spawning habitat for lake trout.

‘Cleaner’ Illinois River may invite invasive scud; Scientists fear impact on Lake Michigan sport fish

Through the murky waters of the Illinois River, scud have been moving steadily toward Lake Michigan.
Scientists are worried that if the invasive reaches the lake, it could replace vital native species at the bottom of the food chain, with cascading effects on the diets of other aquatic species – all the way up the chain to salmon and other sport fish.

Mike Raykovicz: National Archery in the Schools Program stronger than ever

When I was in high school back in the stone age, physical education (we called it gym) consisted of playing games, climbing ropes, or workouts on gymnastic equipment.
I worked in a high school for more than 30 years and found physical education classes now included an emphasis on developing lifelong physical skills such as tennis, golf, and, surprisingly to me, archery. As a colleague at the time told me, “We want to encourage a love of a sport that will last a lifetime. Football and baseball can only be played for so long before a person loses interest or can no longer participate.”
