Patrick Durkin: Bowhunters’ ‘tools of choice’ don’t matter to deer

Wisconsin’s bowhunters registered 103,904 deer during 2024’s four-month arrow-flinging season, the fourth highest archery kill in modern times and the fifth in which they’ve killed over 100,000 whitetails.
That success – driven mostly by folks shooting crossbows and compound bows, along with a smattering of “stick-bow” traditionalists toting recurves and longbows – ended a three-year slide in bow-kills from 2021 through 2023.

Chicago study shows coyotes prefer golf courses – just like humans

Coyotes are expertly adapting to areas where humans live and recreate, leading researchers in Chicago to offer what not many years ago would’ve been surprising advice.
Get used to it. Focused on 54 coyotes – 44 males and 10 females –  the Urban Coyote Research Project tracked predators for an average of 221 days in the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

Wisconsin’s Spooner fish hatchery gets a facelift

Thanks to the help of a Hayward painting company, Phase 1 of restoring a Wisconsin fish hatchery building in Spooner, built in 1913, is now complete.
Crew members from Chris Schobert Painting, of Hayward, donated their time and equipment in putting the finishing touches on the building located on Hwy. 70 in Spooner across the highway from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Northern Region headquarters.

Wisconsin voter turnout, wolf delisting top Hunter Nation ‘wish list’

Hunter Nation leaders and U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wisconsin) urged Wisconsin sportsmen and women to vote and to ramp up pressure on wolf management issues, saying strong voter turnout among hunters, anglers, and trappers could shift statewide policy debates.
During his turn at the podium, Tiffany also called for splitting the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) into two agencies: one focused on fish and wildlife, the other on environmental regulation, a move he said would better protect sportsmen’s license dollars.
