Epizootic hemorrhagic disease continues to be a problem and a concern for hunters in much of southern Michigan.
As of Oct. 30, the often deadly whitetail virus had been confirmed in deer in 14 counties including Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Lenawee, Mecosta, Van Buren, and Washtenaw.

Tom Venesky’s recent column suggests that chronic wasting disease is no reason to stop hunting deer. I’m not so certain of this.
While his suggestion of getting your deer tested before consumption is sound, it isn’t always practical. If I understand the testing process, the hunter deposits the head of his deer into a collection bin, and it is tested by the Game Commission.

The three-year battle to protect an important wildlife area in Huntingdon County, Pa., has come to an end. Earthmoving for a convenience store/truck stop began in mid-July and continued into November, with the construction of a huge retaining wall on the lower end of the adjoining property.
In April, Rutters closed the deal on the farm fields near the intersection of Routes 22 and 26 just west of Huntingdon – purchasing the property for $427,500. This was the final step before beginning construction of a convenience store/truck stop that happens to be adjacent and immediately up-slope from the Old Crow Wetlands.

Freshwater and saltwater fishing are very different pursuits in many ways. But, they are both still fishing. Water and methods may be different, but techniques for both can be modified and projected to help catch more fish in both arenas.
