Commentary: Slow CWD testing process has Pennsylvania hunter thinking twice about where he hunts

At least for some hunters, the length of time it takes to get results back from a test for chronic wasting disease makes them apprehensive to deer hunt in CWD-positive zones. (Stock photo)

Tom Venesky’s recent column suggests that chronic wasting disease is no reason to stop hunting deer. I’m not so certain of this.
While his suggestion of getting your deer tested before consumption is sound, it isn’t always practical. If I understand the testing process, the hunter deposits the head of his deer into a collection bin, and it is tested by the Game Commission.
