Commentary: Report breaks down billion-dollar impact of outdoor recreation in Minnesota

Outdoor recreation is a huge economic driver in Minnesota, contributing $13.5 billion in gross domestic product, $23.5 billion in economic output, and supporting more than 96,000 jobs.
That’s the top-line take-away from a new study issued in September by the state’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Partnership, which provided what may well be the most detailed look at the economic impact of outdoor recreation in state history.

Steve Sarley: Bait shops of our past still reel me in now and then

I used to dream that I could quit my job and get in the fishing bait and tackle business. I figured that nothing would be better than to hang around my shop all day, scooping up minnows and telling my fishing tales to my endless lines of paying customers.
Of course, I imagined that I would have plenty of opportunities to leave the store to go fishing so I could learn about the hot bites and then share the info with my customers. Right?

In Minnesota’s southeast and elsewhere, CWD sampling simply part of the hunting experience

A cool breeze was blowing as I began the long hike in the dark to my deer stand. It was opening morning of the firearms deer season in southeastern Minnesota, and I was looking forward to some treestand time.

Rare hickorynut mussel found in Pennsylvania’s Shenango River

A single, live round hickorynut mussel – a female – was located between the Pymatuning and Shenango reservoirs in Mercer County, sparking optimism that more will be discovered in subsequent surveys next year.

Blood, memories, and the making of an adult deer hunter

My watch disappearing into a pool of blood. Among the many memories of my first deer hunt, that is the most vivid. It happened 10 years ago, when I was 47. I’m what they call an “adult-onset hunter.”
As I chronicled in my recent memoir, I started hunting when I was 40 as a way to survive a brutal divorce and custody fight. My first forays into hunting were ducks, pheasants, and grouse, which are small and non-mammalian. I knew that shooting a deer would be a different story, and it was.
