Wisconsin lost two hard-working conservationists in August, as Carl Batha, 78, and Carol Murphy, 64, passed away.
Batha, of Platteville, retired from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as a wildlife ecologist, and was heavily involved in bringing wild turkeys back to Wisconsin. Murphy enjoyed time outside with a fishing rod and took on challenges as president of the Harry and Laura Nohr Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

When the winds of change blow on the Great Lakes, water is moved around – having a profound impact on where fish want to be. It was over 40 years ago when I first experienced a unique angling anomaly in Lake Ontario, and it continues to this day. Not too many people know about it, or so it seems. Maybe they want to keep it a “secret.”
When the wind blows out of the east for any length of time in the Western Basin of the lake, it pushes away the warm water. It is replaced with colder water. It scatters fish as they look for their preferred temperature zones.

Bow season opens on a Wednesday, making it fairly easy to predict a Day 1 harvest of 650 to 750 deer – give or take a hundred or so.
It’s a simple forecast to make based on hunter activity in past seasons. When Oct. 1 falls midweek, as it did in 2024 (a Tuesday), the harvest tends to be well below 1,000, while openers that hit on a weekend usually have hunters taking well over the 1,000 mark. Last season’s total archery harvest of 73,605 is expected to be in range for hunters, as the deer population remains steady. The record harvest of 75,106 set in 2020 is possible.
