Minnesota pheasant harvest up, duck harvest and overall hunter numbers down in 2024 small-game survey

The Minnesota DNR reported last week the results of its annual small-game hunter survey, with pheasant harvest in 2024 increasing about 14% from a year ago, duck harvest decreasing about 14% from the previous season, and ruffed grouse harvest roughly the same as a season earlier.
The number of small-game hunters last year was down “slightly” from 2023, the DNR reported, and was 5% below the 10-year average.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Make sure your crankbaits are running straight

Trolling is always a great way to cover water and find active fish. The biggest thing anglers overlook with trolling is they trust that their crankbait is tuned and is tracking straight, but they don’t verify. Cranks can and do come out of tune all the time.

Lake Erie ‘on the doorstep’ of having many trophy walleyes to chase

Then again, anglers hoping for a Fish Ohio-qualifying walleye of at least 28 inches are similarly flummoxed. No wonder since while Lake Erie’s total walleye population is eye-popping huge, not so the kind of fish destined for mounting. Or winning an autumn-based fishing derby.

Tom Venesky: Legislation allowing the use of semi-automatic rifles for big game should be shot down in Pennsylvania

In the wake of the passage of Sunday hunting legislation in Pennsylvania, the effort to legalize semi-automatic rifles for big game has resurfaced in the state, and like all of the previous legislative attempts, the current proposals deserve to be shot down.
In the House, state Rep. Charity Krupa released a memo outlining her plans to introduce semi-auto legislation. Krupa, who is a Republican from Fayette County, plans to include language limiting semi-auto rifles for big game to six rounds. That’s six too many.

DNR, Michigan State University studying public use of Michigan’s state game areas

Michigan’s state game areas (SGAs) are rich in tradition. For many people, this is where they were introduced to hunting, and for many more, this is where hunting memories are made and passed down through generations.
However, as interest in hunting declines and participation in non-traditional outdoor activities increases, there’s growing demand for SGAs to support activities like bicycling, hiking, running, etc…, introducing the potential for conflict – especially during hunting seasons. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) would like to know if these two user groups can coexist and are looking to a study led by Michigan State University’s (MSU) Department of Community Sustainability for insight.

Lake sturgeon will be stocked in several Ohio locations this fall

This October, in addition to planting fingerling lake sturgeon into the Maumee River as has been done since 2018, and the Cuyahoga River, which was first done last year, the Genoa Federal Fish Hatchery will be bringing additional fish to plant for the first time in the Sandusky River and Cattaraugus Creek in New York.
These efforts are all in the name of re-establishing spawning populations in streams where the ancient species, which dates back 135 million years, historically occurred.

Commentary: Pennsylvanians should be able to vote for our game, fish & boat commissioners

We’re told one of our greatest privileges is the right to vote. I am able to vote for the president who represents our country, for the governor of our state, for our senators, representatives, county commissioners, school board members and judges.
Yet, when it comes to the commissioner on the Pennsylvania Game and Fish & Boat commissions who represents my district – the person who represents me on hunting and fishing issues and public policy related to the sports I love – I have no say, no vote.

Buckeye State Tree Nursery aims to reforest neediest areas of Ohio

A new state tree nursery is aiming to reforest Ohio’s neediest areas with native species using state-of-the-art technology.
Since opening in February 2024, the new Buckeye State Tree Nursery has begun cultivating 500,000 seeds in its 10 “hoop houses” (greenhouses) and newly constructed production barn. Eighty percent of those seedlings will be ready for distribution by spring 2026 with the remaining 20 percent ready for distribution by spring 2027, according to an Ohio DNR news release.
