Star Watch: What’s a black moon?

There has been some discussion in the news and on social media lately about a “black moon” that occurred on August 23, 2025.
Wikipedia says that “black moon” is an astrological term first recorded in 2016. It is a term not used in astronomy but often refers to a second new moon occurring in the same month. A black moon is not a lunar event you can watch.

Chance encounter in the woods leads to completing potential record-breaking set of moose antlers from Minnesota

World record moose-shed finder Richie Erickson, of Iron, Minn., recently acquired the match to the 133-5⁄8-inch shed he found in May 2022 in northeastern Minnesota. The nontypical set – finally reunited – scores a little over 200 inches, which tops the current state and world record by 13 inches.
“It was really cool, actually. It was neat to see what the animal (would’ve) looked like with them both, and especially because they’re such unique antlers,” Erickson said.
While Erickson found his record-breaking single antler in 2022, finishing the set wasn’t as simple as scouring the forest floor, as he did in 2022.

What causes fibromas in wildlife, and is it a concern for hunters?

Photos of rabbits, squirrels, and deer covered in dramatic, wart-like growths have gone viral on social media in recent weeks.
Although most of the pictures are from the Midwest, wildlife officials say the benign tumors, or fibromas, and the viruses that cause them, have long been present on the Pennsylvania landscape but aren’t as scary a health threat as they may look.
“It’s an easily observable condition and can be alarming to see,” said Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian Andrew DiSalvo, “but its lack of impact on populations precludes us from tracking cases.”

Waterfowl art has a storied history in Minnesota

Minnesota, a land blessed with thousands of lakes and winding rivers, has long been a haven for waterfowl and those who cherish their presence. Through the years, the state’s natural beauty has inspired artists, craftsmen, and conservationists, resulting in a rich tradition of waterfowl art that celebrates the heritage of the region.
The dynamic history of waterfowl art in Minnesota traces its origins to the first time a human created the likeness of a duck on a pictograph or simply weaving it into fabric.
