Speed, weight, and design: Identifying the best modern bullets for hunting whitetails

The problem with identifying the best bullet for white-tailed deer hunting is … getting everyone to agree on it!
One man’s best is another’s worst. I’ve heard just about every bullet ever flung at whitetails described as the best ever and the worst ever. So how does a new deer hunter make a choice?

State Roundup: A hat tip to Wisconsin’s Larry Slagoski

On the front page of the latest print issue of Wisconsin Outdoor News, our veteran newsman Steve Heiting has a story about the retirement of Larry Slagoski, of Weston, the longtime president of the Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin. I can’t imagine any readers would question my decision to place Slagoski’s story on the front page, but just in case anyone is wondering I’ll say the decision was extremely easy.
We have tens of thousands – maybe hundreds of thousands since no one has taken this census – of men and women who volunteer their time, talents and income to support our state’s natural resource management in one form or another. Slagoski happens to be one of those individuals.

K9 helps nab subject in New York poaching case from Oswego County

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Law Enforcement recently announced the arrest of a subject accused of widespread deer poaching in Oswego County.
The arrest, made on Aug 6. by Lieutenants Burnell, Grogan, and ECO Hilton, followed a lengthy investigation that began in late 2024 with a complaint about gunshots on posted, county-owned property.

New York browse study will look at impact whitetails have on developing forests

Researchers are trying to gauge the impact white-tailed deer have on redeveloping woodlands through a new study at a popular preserve in the Southern Adirondacks.
Two new fenced-in areas have appeared in woods on the property of Pack Demonstration Forest in Warrensburg, Warren County, N.Y., but these fences aren’t meant to keep people out of the woods. Instead, the fencing is part of a project to show just how much of an impact white-tailed deer have on forest growth.

Patrick Durkin: Recent fishing trip recalls worst travel day ever

The little city of Eveleth, Minn., is 65 miles north of Duluth, and it’s home to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. It’s also just west of Hwy. 53. I overnighted there in October 1994 after deer hunting in Ontario. More often, though, I’ve bypassed Eveleth while driving to fish or hunt anywhere between Ely, Minn., and Fort Frances, Ontario.
