Dan Ladd: Will New York’s crossbow bill be signed, and if so, when?

The title of this column pretty much poses the question we’ve been hearing repeatedly during the past two months, and one that is being asked more frequently as big game archery hunting seasons approach.
Ever since both houses passed legislation in June to expand crossbow usage in New York, nearly unanimously, proponents have wondered if – and especially – when Gov. Kathy Hochul might sign the bill into law.

Nature Smart: The fascinating fireflies of summer

Backyard and Beyond: Summer’s pace slows

This is the sweetest time of year for many creatures. The hectic breeding season is just about finished, and life is slowing down a bit.
The living is easier in the second half of summer, with plenty of food available to feed youngsters and parents. Rita Tepley snapped an adult red-bellied woodpecker (more extravagantly red than is usual for this species) stuffing grape jelly down its paler offspring’s throat.

Corrections made as Wisconsin’s final 2025-26 deer season map released

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) corrected an error in the 2025 Wisconsin deer season framework map for Green and Pierce counties, which does not change the season as approved by the board in June.
Jeff Pritzl, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) deer program specialist, acknowledged that it was his responsibility to present correct information to the board on the proposed deer season last June, but there was an error in the map that was handed out as supporting information. The error does not make any change in the season as adopted by the board.
