Invasive red swamp crayfish found in pond at Michigan’s Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently confirmed the presence of invasive red swamp crayfish in an outdoor muskellunge rearing pond at Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Mattawan, Van Buren County, Mich.
After stocking muskellunge in Thornapple Lake in Barry County and Lake Hudson in Lenawee County, hatchery staff found the carcasses of two unusual crayfish in the collection basket of Wolf Lake Hatchery Pond 20 (where the fish were reared) after the pond was drained.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: A Lake Erie walleye trip to remember with some help from above

Last year, 2024, was a bit of a blur. My wife and I made the executive decision to sell our house in the city of Lockport, N.Y.
It was controlled chaos as we readied to put the house on the market – taking things to a large storage area, donating to Good Will, putting things in recycling and garbage where appropriate. I can’t tell you how many fishing and hunting trips I put on the back burner because of this move – and that’s only half of it.

Huge record flathead catfish was complete surprise for Michigan bowfisherman

Codie Carlson thought he was aiming at dinner. Instead the relatively new bow fisher went home with a new Michigan state record.
Carlson, 34, of Newport, was headed home from his job in airfield maintenance at Metro Airport on June 29 when he stopped at Plum Creek in Monroe County for a little late-night bowfishing. He certainly  wasn’t thinking about bringing home a new state record flathead catfish.

Streams of Thought: Cases of extreme swimmer’s itch on Minnesota waters a tricky situation

I don’t believe, in my two and a half decades of dedication to this publication, that I’ve ever written about swimmer’s itch – unless I once whined about contracting the allergic reaction several years ago after doing some dog training at a local lake in summertime.
