The .308 Winchester rifle cartridge was unleashed on the public in 1952. Just three years later it morphed into the .243 Winchester. And the race was on.
As most know, the .308 Winchester emerged from military trials as they searched for a more efficient battle rifle/cartridge than the M1 Garand and .30-06. Winchester was in on the search and figured, even if the military did not adopt the shortened .30-06 they’d created, hunters and target shooters might. Good move.
