‘Forever chemicals’ in 65% of Pennsylvania wells tested

In Pennsylvania, 3.5 million people are served by private well systems, according to Penn State Extension.
To better understand potential contamination of the groundwater feeding these systems, a team of researchers from Penn State conducted a novel three-year citizen science study of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — often referred to as forever chemicals — in 167 private wells across Pennsylvania.

Captive red deer tests positive for CWD in Pennsylvania’s Wayne County

Chronic wasting disease has surfaced in another area of northeast Pennsylvania, months after the first confirmation of the disease in the region.
The most recent case – a red deer from a captive deer farm in Wayne County – was confirmed by a U.S. Department of Agriculture lab on March 28 after it was submitted for testing on Jan. 20. According to the state Department of Agriculture, the deer was moved to the Wayne County facility from Huntingdon County on Oct. 25, 2021.

Fish Ohio program marks 50th anniversary

The state’s fishing license program has achieved its century mark this year and everyone who participates in the Fish Ohio program will receive a symbolic piece of birthday cake.
In a manner of speaking. For this year, the Fish Ohio pin will feature as its emblem a very good representation of the leaping largemouth bass that appeared on the 1925 Ohio license. That was the first time Ohio adults were required to buy a fishing license.

Fishing regulations to be relaxed at Iowa’s Dunlap Pond

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will relax the fishing regulations at Dunlap Pond starting July 1 to allow anglers to more freely harvest fish before the lake is completely drained as part of a plan to improve the lake’s depth, habitat, and water quality.
Anglers with a valid fishing license may harvest any size or number of largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and all other fish species from Dunlap Pond.

Weather, nesting conditions have been good for Iowa pheasants in recent months

Iowa’s pheasant population is expected to benefit from the 2024-25 mild winter and average spring that much of the state experienced.
According to Iowa’s state climatologist, last winter was the fourth least snowy in 138 years, and the spring was normal for rainfall and temperature.
“Given the statewide information, we are expecting a good nesting effort and our weather model is predicting pheasant populations will likely be higher for the 2025 hunting season,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
