Here are the best ways to dodge danger in snake country

In the United States, between 7,000 and 8,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes each year, with only about five or six of those individuals dying.

Four of us were heading to the spot where prairie dogs had built a hefty community and the landowner needed them thinned. Halfway there, we heard the telltale sound of a rattlesnake, and – with no one needing to utter a word or a sound – we all froze.
When the group’s movement stopped, so did the rattle, and I asked if anyone knew where the snake was lying. No one was sure, but no one was about to move to find out.
