New visitor center highlights 50th anniversary of Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park

It’s going to be a celebratory summer at Voyageurs National Park – Minnesota’s only national park – in International Falls.
As federal park officials gear up to celebrate the VNP’s 50th anniversary, a new chapter in its history is being written. The Crane Lake Visitor Center, which has been in the works for several years, is opening at the end of May and will have a grand opening event June 6.

Southwest Ohio club hosts hunter education appreciation day

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife recently held a Hunter Education Appreciation Day at the Southern Ohio Dog and Game Protective Association.
It was the first one in several years but event organizers are hoping to make it an annual event again. Hunter and trapper education instructors got the latest news plus an opportunity to hobnob and have some fun. Matt Ortman, hunter education coordinator for the Division of Wildlife, said there are 700 hunter and 250 trapper education instructors in the state.

Genesee River rambling in Pennsylvania’s Northern Tier, where the reward is the fiery brook trout

I had come down from southern New York into the northern border area of Pennsylvania, following the Genesee River, but going against the current.
I was now upstream in the land with the strange and little known Triple Divide, a place where the drainage of the area flows in three directions each with a far distant destination – the Gulf of Mexico via the Allegheny River; mid-Atlantic Ocean via the Susquehanna River and the Saint Lawrence River and north Atlantic via the Genesee River and Lake Ontario.

Kayaking for carp is the kind of adventure that’s habit forming

Sitting in the kayak and just allowing the current to carry me on this fine afternoon, I was hoping my mesmerizing moment would be interrupted by something on the other end of my line. Typical of the summer action on this stream, it had been slow.
The normal catches of smallmouth bass, fallfish, rock bass and even bluegills were far and few between. When the small crayfish jig hit the water on my next cast, things went way different in a hurry.
