Backyard and Beyond: Bald eagle antics

Eagles can be thieves, sometimes stealing the hard-earned catch of other birds, like osprey, ducks, even other bald eagles. Linda Rappel and her husband like to watch eagles and recently came across an adult defending its catch from a younger bird. Rappel could almost hear the eagle saying, “This is mine, bug off!”

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin’s spring hearings voters OK April trout opener

Wisconsin could move its traditional trout opener from early May to early April next year, based on a landslide 63-37 percentage vote during mid-April’s annual conservation hearings.
The inland trout opener was one of many fishing-related changes the outdoor community supported during the statewide hearings, a joint effort by the DNR and the citizen-based Conservation Congress. Voters also backed a five-trout bag limit as the basic statewide trout regulation by a 60-40 margin.

Wisconsin Mixed Bag: Elk application deadline is May 31

Wisconsin’s would-be elk hunters have until Saturday, May 31, to apply for a 2025 elk hunting license.
Wisconsin’s expanding elk population has seen an annual hunt in the Clam Lake Elk Range since 2018 and in the Black River Elk Range since 2024. Each elk range is comprised of approximately 70% public lands, across varying habitat types, offering excellent opportunities to pursue elk.
