Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener at Rice Lake light on walleyes

The 59th annual Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener took place on Barron County’s 939-acre Rice Lake, where most opening day action featured northern pike.
As usual the event, consisting of anglers eager to get out on the water on the opening day of the 2025 inland fishing season, along with Gov. Tony Evers, DNR and Department of Tourism officials and the news media, had the opportunity to fish a different lake and with different fishing partners.

Mike Schoonveld: Low water levels return in Great Lakes cycle

One of the topics I’ve repeatedly covered for Michigan Outdoor News is the ups and downs of the water levels in Michigan’s four Great Lakes (five if you include Lake St. Clair). Those water levels have fluctuated from extreme highs to extreme lows since MON began publishing in 2000.
I remember over-zealous accounts of the damage high water levels were causing, including warnings that low-lying roads, piers, and buildings would soon be inundated by the rising waters.

Commentary: Years of work, and 8,000 acres protected around the Mississippi River’s headwaters

A years-long effort to permanently protect the Mississippi River’s headwaters in northern Minnesota while ensuring continued timber harvest and recreational access is coming to fruition, The Conservation Fund and Northern Waters Land Trust announced May 1.
TCF and NWLT are safeguarding nearly 8,200 acres across nine counties in the region between Walker and Duluth.

Reader stories: Some sportsmen have longer, more painful recovery times after joint replacements

I read with interest the recent Commentary by Dr. Douglas VanderBrook concerning joint replacement. Since I had a knee replacement on Nov. 18, 2024, I was interested in what Dr. VanderBrook had to say, because he was encouraging sportsmen to undergo joint replacements.
I was amazed to read his statement that, “Patients can expect full recovery in just six to 12 weeks.” It didn’t happen for me.

Ohio clubs bridge the cultural divide through fishing

In Northeast Ohio, two bass fishing clubs – one comprised of predominantly white anglers, the other predominantly black – have come together, not just to share the water, but to forge a perfect union. Their story is not limited to fishing; it’s about camaraderie, breaking barriers, and proving that passion for the sport of fishing can bridge any divide.

Wisconsin Roundup: Better days coming for anglers; and why the delay in spring hearing results?

A check with northern Wisconsin bait shops suggest anglers had a good start to the 2025 fishing season, even if it was bit chilly the morning of Saturday, May 3.
It was 33 degrees in Oneida and Vilas counties that morning when I met my learn-to-hunt turkey mentees. Those temps didn’t improve until after 11 a.m. when clouds broke and the sun punched through.
