Star Watch: A star party by the ocean

This past January, my wife, Vicky, and I attended a star party at Fort Macon State Park in coastal North Carolina. The park partners with Crystal Coast Stargazers, a local astronomy club, to offer these kind of events to the public.
Several club members brought their telescopes for visitors to look through and provided help on things to see.

Agency sets spraying plans for Pennsylvania state game lands

In an effort to protect wildlife habitat, the Pennsylvania Game Commission plans to spray over 38,000 acres of state game lands this spring for gypsy moths.
Spraying is planned for 16 state game lands – 38,146 acres in all – and will begin as soon as leaf-out occurs and gypsy moth egg masses hatch, likely in late April and May. No spraying was to be scheduled the mornings of youth turkey season (April 26) or the opening day of spring gobbler (May 3).

Giant bruins among those harvested in Pa. last year

Pennsylvania has its share of giant bears. The Game Commission’s recently released 2024 bear harvest totals prove that yet again.
Consider the Venango County bear Heath Bromley, of Titusville, got with a crossbow in October. It weighed in at 597 pounds – a tremendous bear any hunter would be happy to take. And yet, it was just the 10th heaviest harvested by a Pennsylvania hunter in the 2024 seasons.

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission intends to use boat funds to pay for hatcheries

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission is pushing for legislation that would allow it to transfer money between its Boat Fund and its Fish Fund – a move the agency says is essential to avoid another license fee increase in the next few years.
The commission is working with state Sen. Greg Rothman, R-Perry, chair of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee, to draft a bill that would amend Pennsylvania’s Title 30, which requires that fish and boat fund revenues be kept separate.
