Ohio’s spring walleye run at its peak about now

At the end of March, the annual walleye runs in Ohio’s Sandusky and Maumee rivers were gaining momentum with anglers scoring some catches on each stream.
Paying close attention is Mike Wilkerson, fisheries management supervisor for the Division of Wildlife in Findlay, who will direct his staff to collect eggs for the state fish hatcheries to use for saugeye production for stocking inland lakes and reservoirs.

Here’s how Minnesota’s Easton Fothergill won on bass fishing’s biggest stage

Bass tournaments often are determined by who lands big bass and who loses them.
That is precisely how the 2025 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour was determined in late March on Lake Ray Roberts north of Ft. Worth, Texas. Minnesota’s Easton Fothergill landed an 8-pound, 1-ounce largemouth in the last two hours of the tournament while Illinois’ Trey McKinney lost a 7-pounder late in the day.

Al Lindner: Spring river action is the ultimate walleye window

With game-fish seasons closed on inland lakes across much of the Midwest, anglers flock to river systems in hopes of setting the hook. Mass migrations of walleyes are making their way to spawning areas, and legions of walleye anglers aren’t far behind. Spring is a favorite time of year for many, and that’s for good reason. This is, without a doubt, the best timeframe to target walleyes.

Gretchen Steele: Proper care and handling matters when it comes to morels

This may seem a tad early, especially for my northern friends, but after watching the weather forecast for southern Illinois on a recent morning, I can feel in my mushroom ‘spidey sense’ that things are about to get popping in the woods. Soon.
Nothing says spring in southern Illinois like a skillet full of fresh crappie or bluegill fillets and morel mushrooms.

Wisconsin State Roundup: A hat tip to Bob Haase and the many other great state conservationists

Thanks so much to Bob Haase, of Eldorado, for all he has given to conservation and Wisconsin’s outdoor community over so many years. Haase has been named the 2025 Wisconsin Outdoor News Conservationist of the Year. His nominations came from several directions.
I probably say this every year – this is always a tough call. We receive nominations for this award every year for folks who have done so much for our natural resources and the people who enjoy the outdoors.
