Mitch Oswald steps into ‘conduit’ role with Illinois DNR

The Illinois DNR has a new Field Operations Section Head, as Mitch Oswald stepped into the role in late November. Oswald previously worked for USDA’s Animal and Plant Heath Inspection Service. At DNR, he filled the position of Don Kahl, who made the move to DNR Ag and Grassland Manager.
Oswald’s career in wildlife conservation began early while he was studying at Blackburn College in Carlinville for a degree in Environmental Biology.

Tests disclose Pittsburgh crows died from avian flu

Highly pathogenic avian influenza – often referred to as HPAI – recently was confirmed in American crows in Allegheny County, adding to the number of cases surfacing across Pennsylvania.
About 50 dead crows were found on and alongside railroad tracks in the city of Pittsburgh at the end of January and reported to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. As part of its field investigation, the agency swabbed three of the crows, which were confirmed to have the highly contagious, deadly disease.

Pennsylvania 15-year-old wins fourth NWTF calling title in junior division

Bo Bartlebaugh won’t be competing in the Junior Division at next year’s National Wild Turkey Federation Grand National Turkey Calling Championships. He’ll be 16 years old, and that division is for callers ages 11-15.

That’s probably just fine with a lot of youths: Bartlebaugh, of Armagh, Pa., continued his dominance last month by capturing his fourth straight Junior Division title.
