I remember clearly my first encounter with a snowy owl. I was driving in western Minnesota, in Pope County, looking for winter birds, when I noticed a white object sitting on top of a light pole. My heart raced as I got closer and realized it was, in fact, a snowy owl.
It was obliging and stayed on the pole while I approached and took photos of it, which I still have (somewhere, in a box …). Snowies are pretty tame, because where they spend most of the year, they don’t see many people.

Wolves in a snowy landscape are my winter photography focus in Yellowstone National Park. We make every effort to locate and position ourselves to capture images of these amazing creatures. This was the case recently, while leading a tour in the interior of Yellowstone.

While we assume everything was done correctly before the boat was put away in the fall, many times that task was done haphazardly and we tend to pay the consequences of those actions the first couple of times out in the spring. So, unless you are seasoned veteran of the waters and know exactly what things to look for, take a few minutes to make sure everything is ready to go.
