Commentary: Ohio’s Columbus National Fishing Expo never disappoints

My February has meant the National Fishing Expo for the last several years. I represent Ohio Outdoor News as I sell subscriptions for the company. However, the Expo has become more than a three-day job for me.
It’s a family reunion where I don’t have to feed anyone. It’s handshakes and laughter with old friends and a chance to form ‘once a year’ new ones. While I never seem to have a chance to explore the show, talking about the magazine with Expo visitors is a great opportunity.

Three domestic dog and wolf incidents in Wisconsin confirmed through early 2025

A yellow Lab mixed breed dog that lost its life to a wolf or wolves on Feb. 2 stands as one of three verified wolf/”house” dog incidents so far in 2025 from Wisconsin.
That dog represents the first of two dogs confirmed as wolf kills this year. A fourth incident – a second dead dog, a hunting dog – was confirmed as wolf depredation in the town of Bear Bluff in Jackson County on Feb. 22, with the verification being made by a USDA-Wildlife Services employee.

March fishing in Michigan can mean great late-ice opportunities

March is a fickle month for Michigan anglers. Supposedly, it begins with winter-like conditions and ends as a harbinger of spring.

What is lake ice made out of? There’s more to it than you may realize

What is lake ice made out of? The easy answer is frozen water, but there’s more to it.
At the beginning of winter, the first ice is primary ice (skim ice). It’s thin, and ice crystals orient horizontally. Next up is secondary ice. These ice crystals form perpendicular (vertically) to primary ice, and the ice grows downward. The third type of ice is super-imposed ice.
