Iowa DNR encourages eager paddlers to wait for warmer water temperatures

The weather is starting to feel like spring in Iowa, but water temperatures are still dangerously cold.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommends that paddlers wait for consistent warm weather to allow the water temperatures to rise slowly. It could be several weeks before water temperatures are ideal and safe as water and air temperatures continue to change.

Record Illinois bobcat harvest suggests strong population across the state

When the Illinois bobcat season ended Feb. 15, no trapper or hunter would have been surprised to learn of a record harvest.
It was already a season of records. In September, a record 9,200 bobcat lottery applicants vied for the record 2,000 permits issued by DNR. Still, the final tally is turning heads. DNR reported a harvest of 649 bobcats – far exceeding the previous record of 389 in the 2023-24 season. Much of the increase was due to hunters, who were responsible for 415 (61.6%) of the harvest.

Apply for licenses for Wisconsin’s 2025 elk season

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that the application period for the 2025 elk hunt opens March 1 and continues through May 31. This year, there will be increased opportunity within the Black River Elk Range, as both antlered and antlerless harvest authorizations will be available through the state licensing process.
Applicants are required to select a zone when applying (the Black River Elk Range or Clam Lake Elk Range). This year’s elk quota for the Black River Elk Range will be four antlered elk and five antlerless elk. The Clam Lake Elk Range quota will be eight antlered elk, with 50% available to Ojibwe hunters.

Mike Raykovicz: How much is too much when it comes to the cost of archery equipment?

I don’t know about you, but 20 bucks for certain things is still a lot of money to me.
Twenty dollars for a pizza or a couple of Big Macs just turns my head. I know everything is relative and, even though it was years ago, I can still remember the reaction of my parents when my wife and I took them out to dinner. The bill came to 38 dollars for the four of us and I thought my father would fall out of his chair. He was astounded at the high price.
Now, as the saying goes, the shoe is on the other foot, but it’s not the dinner bill that amazes me.

Wisconsin DNR budget has hunting, trapping, and fishing fee hikes

Gov. Tony Evers released his 2025-27 biennial budget Feb. 18 that would renew the Knowles/Nelson Stewardship Program and encourage hunting, trapping, and fishing license fee increases to help cover deficits in the Wisconsin DNR’s Fish and Wildlife Account.
The proposed 762-page budget now goes to the legislature where Republican leaders have said Evers included too much spending and they will come up with their own budget. Eventually a new state budget will be put together by the legislature’s Joint Finance Committee. Evers will be able to veto some portions, but have to sign a final budget for it to go into effect on July 1 or after.
