Pennsylvania game agency OKs deals to add acres to state game lands

Pennsylvania game commissioners, at their recent meeting, approved 11 land acquisitions – two donations, nine new purchases and one right-of-way exchange – that would add more than 1,800 acres to state game lands. One additional purchase was approved via notational vote on Sept. 20, 2024.

Public access restricted at Pennsylvania’s Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area

Due to highly pathogenic avian influenza that is currently affecting many parts of the state, the Pennsylvania Game Commission restricted public access at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area effective Feb. 4.
With the continued warming trends and the anticipated arrival of snow geese to Middle Creek, this decision was made out of an abundance of caution for human and domestic animal health.

Neighbor saves Carbon County, Pa., man in attack by rabid bear

A Carbon County, Pa., man feels lucky to be alive, having survived an attack by a rabid black bear that was killed by a quick-acting neighbor.
Andrew Nierer, of Jim Thorpe, was making a food run to a grocery store Jan. 19 when, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, a bear “aggressively approached” and then scratched and bit him.

Commentary: It’s time for Pennsylvania to amend the Clean and Green Program

Started in the 1970s, the Clean and Green program was a well-intentioned way of providing incentives for individuals to preserve the natural resources of the commonwealth through tax breaks. By enrolling land as either agricultural use, forest reserve or agricultural reserve, they could enjoy a significant reduction in property taxes by keeping land in a natural state.

Unique fence design deters whitetails from Pennsylvania crop fields

After suffering continuous crop losses due to deer, Steve Hess was ready to abandon some of his rented farmland.
But with two strands of wire and some inexpensive fiberglass fence posts, he found a solution. Hess, who operates William Hess Farms in Benton, Pa., had been struggling with deer damage that was so severe it didn’t make financial sense to keep farming some parcels.
