Restoring Volo Bog in Illinois is vital, unique team task

At Volo Bog State Natural Area, a hard-working, collaborative team of volunteers and staff recently embarked on a pioneering restoration of Illinois’ only open-water bog. Prior, important work at this Lake County site has focused on the surrounding marsh and adjacent uplands, but this is the first time restoration is taking place in the heart of the bog itself.

Discovery of spadefoot toad was work of Illinois, Syrian scientists

The Syrian Spadefoot Toad has been rediscovered in the war-torn country with the help of Syrian community scientists and Illinois researchers.
The finding is the result of years of dedication by Yaman Omran of the University of Aleppo and citizen scientists in a country whose recent history has been marked by conflict.

Illinois Mixed Bag: DNR biologists collecting Christmas trees

DNR fisheries biologists are collecting live Christmas trees to be used as fish habitat in local lakes. The collected trees will be bundled together, weighted, and submerged at lakes, providing critical habitat for multiple fish species and promoting algae growth for insects that attract fish for anglers. The trees will naturally decompose over time.
