Illinois fishermen begin 2025 the same way they begin most years – confident this will be the year someone finally catches a largemouth bass that tops the most coveted state record.
Alas, 2024 began with similar confidence. And last year ended with typical results: nobody came close to breaking the largemouth bass record. So, come next February – Feb. 15, 2026, to be exact – it will be 50 years since the 13-pound, 1-ounce largemouth was hooked at Stone Quarry in Lake County.

With the two regular gun seasons in the books, Iowa’s deer hunting has shifted to a more solitary endeavor with the opening of the late muzzleloader season and the reopening of the archery season.
Jace Elliott, state deer biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said roughly 15-20,000 hunters will participate in the late muzzleloader season and likely harvest about 10,000 deer.
If you want to hunt Western states in 2025 and beyond for elk, deer, pronghorns or other big game, start learning all you can about each state’s wildlife programs and application systems.
Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you’re treading water the first week. No two states offer the same wildlife species, wildlife numbers, license requirements or application systems and deadlines. You’ll feel frustrated trying to learn what’s behind every door, but the sooner you start, the better odds you’ll have to draw coveted tags each fall.

Wisconsin’s early catch-and-release inland trout season using artificial lures only started Jan. 4 and runs through May 2 on designated streams. Anglers are encouraged to reduce their reel and handling time with the fish as much as possible.
