Steve Piatt: Move to paper licenses costs some New York hunters

I’m trying not to let a sore back or the fact that I’ve yet to harvest a deer despite many days of serious effort affect my mood, and I don’t think it has.
But when I saw the DEC’s press release on the adoption of regulations that allow license-issuing agents to “recover costs associated with printing and mailing paper sporting licenses and other items” sold through the state’s Automated Licensing System, I rolled my eyes.

Gretchen Steele: Southern Illinois public lands in for big changes in ‘25

It’s been a busy couple of weeks with announcements concerning some southern Illinois public lands.
The first announcement we received was from DNR outlining a change in management duties at Carlyle Lake. DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced changes to management responsibilities at the Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. About 2,600 acres at Eckert’s Woods and Speaker Lake sub-impoundments will be returned to the USACE for wildlife management efforts.

Waiting for ice in New York this winter? Take advantage of this transitional time period for anglers

Ice might be slow to form again this winter in New York, but why spend the time waiting for that special time of year indoors?! Get out and fish!
The last few years have been poor for ice fishing and it motivated me to pivot and begin exploring open water opportunities that we have in late fall/early winter. This transitional time of year can provide great action and you will find very little competition from other anglers.

Wisconsin NRB takes up Minocqua chain, Lake Superior fish rules

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) members approved an extension of the emergency rule to allow continued limited harvest of walleyes on the Minocqua Chain of Lakes in Oneida County for the remainder of the 2024-25 fishing season.
The fishery was covered by an emergency rule in 2024 that would have expired at the end of January. This new emergency rule will extend the limited open season through the winter until the season is open under the permanent rule on April 1.

Commentary: NRA, state of New York finally finalize lawsuits, so what was accomplished?

Six years and an unimaginable amount of NRA member dollars later, the National Rifle Association and the state of New York have concluded their rancorous legal battle.
Before even taking office, New York Attorney General Letitia James described the NRA as “a terrorist organization” and vowed to take them down.
She didn’t. But that didn’t prevent her from portraying what she did accomplish as “wins.” Neither did the new rules mandated by New York Supreme Court Judge Joel Cohen prevent the NRA from portraying the conclusion as a win for them, too.
