Hunters who took part in the Minnesota muzzleloader deer season that ran Nov. 30 through Dec. 15 saw somewhat similar success to what hunters had during the regular firearms season – an increase in the deer kill from 2023, but still down from the five-year mean.
Muzzleloader hunters registered 8,253 deer this year. That’s up 1% from a year ago and down 11% from the five-year mean (about 9,200).
Years ago when a Jackson County resident and Conservation Congress delegate by the name of Al Jacobsen pushed hard for the Wisconsin DNR to establish an elk herd in the Black River Falls State Forest, most everyone working in that direction anticipated crop damage to be one of the biggest issues in bringing elk into that area.
That and a potential for vehicle collisions. Jacobsen’s years of work eventually paid off and now we have a growing elk herd.

Mike Purnell and his brother Lloyd concede they can’t find every carcass, skeleton or bone after deer die of chronic wasting disease on the family’s 700 acres of farmlands in southwestern Wisconsin.
But heading into December, the Purnells hadn’t found any deer skeletons this year. They hope that means their aggressive approach to managing deer remains their best option. The Purnells found enough dead deer in 2019 and 2020 to pattern where CWD-infected whitetails usually die.

The Minnesota DNR says it’s confident in its approach to dealing with Red Lake zebra mussels and other aspects of its invasive aquatic species management and thus, doesn’t intend to enter into a “conservation law enforcement agreement” drawn up by Red Lake Nation and presented to the Governor’s Office in July.
A draft of the agreement was shared with state DNR officials at a July “consultation meeting,” according to the DNR.

Following debate that stretched through two meetings in November and December, the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Natural Resources in Minnesota found common ground on whether baseball fields or splash pads qualify for funding for the outdoors.
In short, those kinds of projects – by themselves, stand-alones – won’t qualify for Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund dollars, the proceeds of lottery sales. However, the compromise commission members agreed upon, prior to approval on Wednesday, Dec. 11, is to fund environment-enhancing aspects of baseball fields, basketball courts, splash pads, or playground equipment projects.
