John Pollmann: Here are some changes to watch for with South Dakota’s outdoors

After 12 years and more than 200 columns, I’m hanging up my hat as a columnist for Outdoor News in Minnesota. It’s been a great run, but it’s simply time for a change.
Change has been at the heart of what I’ve covered in this space, whether it be new laws generated by the South Dakota Legislature that relate to the outdoors, modifications to federal conservation programs that affect habitat in my home state and beyond, or pulling back the curtain on the motivations behind a changing landscape – the loss of grasslands, wetlands, or other natural features.

Patrick Durkin: Hunting camp’s legends, memories live on

When walking around a dead man’s hunting camp, each glance and every step seems to stir up old stories, memories, and unasked questions from decades-long friendships.
When the day ends and you’re back at camp with those who knew him longer, you hear new tales and tributes while sipping scotch and eating bratwursts. Some such accounts answer years-old questions, while others expose assumed “secrets” as common knowledge among some crew members.

Novice hunter’s perseverance pays off during Wisconsin gun season

Ironically, when the buck of a lifetime wandered by his Washburn County deer stand on the second day of the Wisconsin nine-day gun season, Minneapolis, Minn., resident Cody Chamberlain was reading the book, Undaunted Courage.
The book is a great read for outdoor enthusiasts because it chronicles the early 1800s Lewis and Clark Expedition across the newly acquired western portion of the country after the Louisiana Purchase.
“With three kids at home, I don’t have a lot of time to read, so when the hunting’s slow I’ll dig out a book while keeping an eye on the woods,” said Chamberlain.

Trapping is among the oldest of human skill sets; opportunities abound for newcomers

You descend from a long line of trappers. Virtually all of us have ancestors at some point down the line who snared or trapped animals for food, for clothing, or for tools or trade.
Furbearing animals, a category of wildlife under state and federal law, today still provide a litany of opportunity and products. Moreover, trapping is a useful service to wildlife management and public health.

A ‘crappie day’ during DNR’s fall survey is a good sign for Crab Orchard Lake anglers in southern Illinois

It was a crappie day, so to speak –  but most certainly in the best possible way, at least for  southern Illinois anglers who fishing for slabs at Crab Orchard Lake.
Findings of DNR’s annual fall trap net survey include the collection of 2,863 crappies in 12 nets over a two-night period in mid-November. The catch rate of 119 fish per net night more than doubled the typical 40 to 50 crappies per net night, and far exceeds the average crappie catch rate across the state.
