Nov. 9, 2024, was a great day in the woods for Ohio bowhunters

Archery hunters in Ohio harvested 5,390 whitetailed deer on Saturday, Nov. 9, the highest single-day total this season, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
The 10 most successful harvest dates this season have been: Saturday, Nov. 9 (5,390 deer); Saturday, Nov. 2 (5,047); Friday, Nov. 8 (3,636); Sunday, Nov. 3 (3,392); Saturday, Oct. 26 (2,753); Thursday, Nov. 7 (2,483); Friday, Nov. 1 (2,460); Sunday, Oct. 27 (2,236); Saturday, Oct. 19 (2,166); Saturday, Sept. 28 (1,778).

Commentary: Post Thanksgiving, the times are a changing

Well, another Thanksgiving Day is in the books. It seemed to slip up on me this year even though I typically welcome the holiday with great anticipation, counting the days until its arrival.
I believe the passage of time changes how and what we think about the holiday. At this stage of the game, I think less about going afield for an all-day workout with shotgun in hand and more about the fact cold weather is just around the corner.

Ohio Insider: Ohio hunters certainly successful at harvesting mature bucks

According to the National Deer Association’s (NDA) annual deer report, Ohio ranks just outside of the Top 10 for mature buck harvest.
According to the report, deer hunters in the United States are harvesting more mature bucks today than at any time in recorded history. That is true as a percentage of the antlered buck harvest and the actual number of bucks harvested.

Not large, Pennsylvania State Game Land 285 still offers a lot

Rain was falling on an early fall day as I was driving on Route 251 heading to neighboring Ohio. Just before I left Pennsylvania I began seeing the familiar game lands signs pointing toward State Game Land 285.
Since I was in no hurry to get to my destination, I made the turns necessary to get to the public parcel and the first thing I saw standing in the first parking area of the game land was a flock of turkeys.
