Man who killed eagles on a Native American reservation gets nearly 4 years in prison

A Washington state man accused of leading a wildlife trafficking ring on a Native American reservation that killed thousands of eagles and hawks to sell on the black market was sentenced Thursday to nearly four years in prison.
The trafficking ring operated for years on the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwest Montana, exploiting high demand among tribal members for feathers and other bird parts that are used in powwows and sacred ceremonies.

Vigil held for Grizzly No. 399, the beloved Grand Teton bear who was killed by a vehicle

During her nearly three decades roaming the snowy wilderness of the Teton Range, Grizzly No. 399 became a beloved mama bear with millions of parkgoers following her yearly adventures and her ever-growing family tree.
Nature lovers are mourning the matriarch of the world-famous bear family after she was fatally struck by a vehicle Oct. 22 on a highway in western Wyoming. Dozens braved frigid weather in the picturesque ski town of Jackson on Saturday night to attend a candlelight vigil watched by some 1,300 others online.

Diversity is the name of the game on Thousand Island Lake in Michigan’s Gogebic County

Healthy populations of walleyes, pike, bass and panfish continue to make Gogebic County’s Thousand Island Lake a fishery worth visiting.
Part of the 15-lake Cisco Chain of Lakes, Thousand Island Lake is located approximately 13 miles southwest of the town of Watersmeet in southern Gogebic County. Big African and Lindsley lakes flow into Thousand Island and the lake drains into Cisco Lake and eventually into the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River.

Jeff Frischkorn: Ohio Division of Wildlife publishes expenditures for 2024

The Ohio Division of Wildlife’s money tree is watered by the state’s anglers and hunters. Even the greenbacks from the federal government pour from funds supported in one fashion or another by sportsmen and sportswomen.
And for Fiscal Year 2024, the agency brought in $92,367,367 while spending $92,244,172. If that appears the wildlife division is cutting things close, it’s important to remember that year-to-year revenues and expenses are not always apples-to-apples identical, nor even close. To stave off being destitute and pleading “more gruel, please” the wildlife division squirrels away enough funds to anticipate projects and unexpected expenses.
