Build better housing for bats, birds to control pests and insects

Do you want to make life more hazardous for mice, ticks, flies, gnats, and mosquitoes in your backyard or around your hunting property?
If so, now is a good time to start. Cooler weather and shorter days allow more time in your workshop to build nesting boxes for airborne hunters. And when winter ends, you can deploy your new housing units to attract and hold more mouse-hunting owls, and insect-eating bats and birds to patrol your properties and eat all those small annoyances.

Jeremiah Haas: Mentors make all the difference in conservation

News in the past few weeks has included an announcement that I have been selected to the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame, in part for my work as a fish biologist, but additionally for the efforts outside of my day job.
Having had some time to really stew on this now, I can say with 100% certainty that I really didn’t do anything different than the people who were my examples of what is expected when you are granted the responsibility of taking care of your corner of the world. Therefore, I would like to tell you a little bit about the people that influenced and shaped how I approach the outdoors because much came from them even when it was just the little things that made the difference.

New York Reader Stories: A bloodless trail after a vital shot

It was Thursday, the 9th of November, and I was going over my checklist of everything I needed for my week-long hunting expedition in Schuyler County, N.Y.
I was about ready to place my Mission Sniper Lite Crossbow on the back seat of my vehicle when that inner voice called me to check my equipment. I discovered that at 20 yards my crossbow was shooting 2 inches to the left of the bullseye. It didn’t take but a few minutes before I was hitting the bullseye dead on. This certainly began to build confidence in myself and my crossbow.

Streams of Thought: Tackling invasive buckthorn is both a physical and mental battle

As I brushed my teeth in front of a mirror on a recent Sunday evening, I noticed multiple red scratches on my forearms.
I wasn’t surprised I was mostly oblivious to the sting of pain from those minor wounds; I’d not long before cleaned the blood from the backs of my hands and a cut or two on my face. But it was the sweat, some of which had soaked my cap, that’d I’d found least appealing about my recent project: another afternoon of battling buckthorn.
