Commentary: New York sportsmen and women, our future is in your hands – vote

Many of our fellow hunters, anglers, and trappers express their concerns and unhappiness regarding laws and regulations related to their respective sports through editorials, social media and local sportsmen meetings. But how many actually take action to help change things?
If you do not, there are several courses of action we can all take.

From gel cells to lithium batteries, keep your modern ice electronics working

It wasn’t all that long ago when ice fishing, equipment-wise anyway, was a simple sport. Pack some gear in a sled, fill the auger with gas and oil, trudge onto the ice, and start cutting a bunch of holes. Some would produce fish, most wouldn’t.
As with almost everything now, those days are no more.

Illinois upland bird hunters remain scarce, but more quail, roosters await

With upland game season opening Nov. 2 in Illinois, this may be a good time for rabbit hunters to hold their collective breaths and look away.
Quail and pheasant hunters will want to exhale and pay attention.
DNR’s call counts and population surveys up and down the state this summer resulted in observers recording an average of 0.53 quail per stop, an encouraging 34% increase over 2023 counts. Quail were recorded at 26% of stops, which is a 23.7% increase.

Lake Superior lake trout, ciscoes, whitefish in good shape, Wisconsin DNR says

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved an emergency order at its Oct. 23 meeting updating cisco and lake trout quotas on Lake Superior.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) updates the annual assessments of Lake Superior fish stocks and fishing quotas every two to three years and the current emergency rule ended in October. This emergency rule will fill the gap until a permanent rule is brought to the board in December to take effect this coming spring.

Deer season reaching annual ‘prime time’ point in the Midwest

Standing on the sidelines is not a good look for Illinois deer hunters. Yet thousands and thousands of shotguns – and now single-shot rifles – sit unattended in thousands and thousands of gun cabinets.
The hunters? The first weekend of the firearms season arrives Nov. 22-24. Until then, it’s wait and watch as the rut nears. Prime time is near. Chatter and photos on social media indicate a promising deer season overall as October turns into November.

State Roundup: Rachel Bouressa appointed to Wisconsin Natural Resources Board

We have a new Natural Resources Board (NRB) member as of Friday, Oct. 18, when Gov. Tony Evers appointed Rachel Bouressa to the NRB.
Evers made the move following the resignation of Paul Buhr, who resigned from the board just ahead of Bouressa’s appointment. Buhr, of the Vernon County town Viroqua, had been appointed to the NRB by Evers on Jan. 20, 2023, as board member representing the agricultural industry.

Cormorants more common on New York’s popular Lake George, prompting study of population

The proliferation of a fish-eating bird in parts of the Adirondacks this summer has raised concerns among anglers about the impact they can have on waters they frequent, prompting plans for a study next summer on one popular upstate lake in New York.
A growing population of double-crested cormorants that seem to be expanding their territory around the Adirondacks drew the attention of boaters and anglers on a number of waters, particularly on the waters of angler and vacationer favorite Lake George.
