For one Minnesota family, public-land deer hunt is a 70-Year Tradition

When Virgil and Mary Ann Baltes moved to Blackduck, Minn., in 1953, they became friends with folks who homesteaded forest property southeast of the city. A few years later, Virgil, a couple of his brothers, and his brother-in-law were invited to hunt deer there. They quickly accepted the invitation.
“The way I remember, that was the start of the Balteses hunting that land,” said Virgil’s son Jim. “And this year, we will be back again.”

Tips to enjoy traditional autumn turkey hunting

Of all the autumn hunts, turkey hunting is probably the most challenging. Unless a hunter has access to lightly hunted private property, he or she is going to have to expend some effort in their quest to harvest an autumn bird.
This begins prior to the actual season. Although turkeys tend to favor the same general areas each year, a hunter needs to make sure that birds are still in the locations where he has found them in previous years.

EHD continues its ugly spread to the north in Ohio

As Ohio’s statewide archery season approached and then opened on Sept. 28, hunters, property owners, and kayakers/canoeists began to encounter dead deer of all shapes and sizes, including trophy bucks, often near water sources.
Of those submitted for testing to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, the cause of death as Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) has been confirmed in 20 counties.

Kate Severson circles back to Minnesota to join staff at Voyageurs National Park

For most people who take a trek into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the experience is life-enriching. But for some, like Kate Severson, it’s life-altering.
When the Rochester, Minn., native graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in English and Japanese studies, a career working in the great outdoors wasn’t even on her radar as she left home to spend two years teaching English as a second language in a rural village in Hokkaido, Japan.

Vin T. Sparano: Hard to beat lever-action guns in the backwoods

In some of my recent gun magazines, I’m now detecting a trend in our guns. Most noticeably, the wonderful return and focus on our beloved lever-action guns…the cowboy guns of yesteryear.
Anyone who has read my writings must know that I am not a big fan of the AR-type rifles, which now seem to be labeled “tactical.” I also get tired of confessing that these “tactical” guns may well shoot faster, farther and more accurately at absurd ranges than my old Marlin lever-action rifles.
