Leaders for Pennsylvania, Maryland natural resources talk water quality

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn and Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz toured water quality projects and explored opportunities for new and improved trail connections at a meeting in Pennsylvania and Maryland Sept. 10.
The joint event also served as a way for the two state leaders to strengthen their partnership and recommit to shared goals to improve water quality in local streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

Two kayakers drown on Salt Fork Lake over holiday

Two men drowned while kayaking on Salt Fork Lake in Guernsey County, Ohio, on Labor Day weekend, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR).
Published reports said Thomas Fowler, 53, of Zanesville, and Robert Hurst, 69, of Chillicothe, were paddling in individual sit-in kayaks opposite the beach about 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 1 when one man’s kayak capsized, sending him into the water. The other man jumped out of his kayak to assist his fellow boater.

Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania recently announced $50,000 in funding from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation’s Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant program to continue conservation projects benefiting chimney swifts.

Hunting the Adirondack backwoods makes for some great tales to share

It was a warm day in the mountains, so rather than hunting I decided to do a few chores around camp, including splitting a little kindling.
As I was working on that a fellow suddenly came huffing and puffing up the brook in front of camp. He looked to be about 60 or so and a few years older than me. It was also obvious he didn’t know where he was. He also probably knew the forecast was for temperatures in the teens that night.

Michigan DNR will no longer relocate nuisance geese, relying instead on euthanizing problem birds

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is eliminating its goose relocation program, and will rely instead on lethal force through a federal government contract to deal with nuisance geese.
“The department has already decided on these programmatic changes,” Barb Avers, the DNR’s waterfowl and wetlands specialist, told Michigan Outdoor News. “There’s a number of reasons we need to make this change.”

Pennsylvania group celebrates 50 years of annual canoe trips

In early August 1974, close friends Paul Misko and Mike McGraw treated their soon-to-be wives to a week-long canoe and camping trip on the Juniata River.
The men were close friends who’d grown up together in Altoona, Pa., joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. Although one sojourn was enough for the women, Misko and McGraw returned the following summer with a few friends for what would evolve into an annual tradition. This year marked the Eureka Canoe Club’s 50th anniversary and included 26 paddlers from as far away as Alaska, New England and Florida.
