Man picking berries kills grizzly bear in Montana

A 72-year-old man picking huckleberries in Montana shot and killed a grizzly bear after it attacked in a surprise encounter and injured him badly enough that he had to be hospitalized, authorities said on Friday, July 19.
The man was alone on national forest land when the adult female charged him on July 18. He suffered significant injuries before killing the bear with a handgun, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials said.

Outdoor Observations: Survey seeks to better understand the demand for elk licenses in Michigan

The Michigan DNR and Michigan State University have teamed up on a survey of hunters who have applied for an elk permit.
The survey is part of a graduate student’s master’s thesis to try to understand the demand for elk licenses in Michigan.
They’re emailing the survey to people who applied for an elk permit in the past and provided an email address, according to MSU researcher, professor Frank Lupi. I completed the survey in a few minutes, but was concerned about a couple questions regarding one’s preferred choices for a license if an auction was held for a few elk licenses to raise money for elk research.

Bass most sought after fish at Highlandtown Lake in Ohio’s Columbiana County

Highlandtown Lake in Columbiana County in northeast Ohio isn’t a large lake at just 184 acres. But, for what it lacks in size, this out-of-the-way picturesque lake is a pretty good place to tie into a largemouth bass.
So says Curt Wagner, fish management supervisor for the ODNR Division of Wildlife in Akron.

Mississippi reduces crappie limits, becoming first state to reduce limits in response to live sonar

Ever since the first live-sonar units hit the market six years ago, the outdoors media has reported some controversy regarding the advanced fish finding technology. Several manufacturers build the units, and the advanced fish-finders are generally referred to as forward-facing sonar (FFS).
FFS allows anglers to see real-time, live imagery of fish underwater. More advanced users can actually watch their fishing lure or bait underwater, maneuvering it directly to the fish. Some have argued the technology is too good and the anglers using it could put extra pressure on fish populations – especially crappies and muskies. Now, concern that the technology might be too good has led Mississippi biologists to reduce crappie creel limits on the state’s most popular lakes.

Ohio’s Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling Program continues efforts to clean up environment

The Ohio Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling Program is continuing its mission of collecting plastic before it reaches a landfill by helping secure two new grants for its partners.
So far in 2024, nearly 50,000 pounds of boat shrink wrap has been collected. That’s in addition to the more than 2.3 million pounds recovered since the program started in 2006, a collaboration created by the Ohio Clean Marinas Program. Shrink wrapping boats is a way to protect them during the wintertime and wrapping a 25-foot boat is equivalent to 2,062 plastic shopping bags.
