Pennsylvania 17-year-old Sam Adkins visualizes, then takes top spot at CMP events in Ohio

Sam Adkins didn’t expect to become the Individual 3P Precision Champion at the 2024 CMP National Air Rifle Championship at Camp Perry in Ohio. Although the 17-year-old from Hummelstown, Pa., has been shooting since he was young and is skilled enough to earn a spot on the University of Kentucky rifle team, he still didn’t see himself taking the top spot.
“I was very surprised. One teammate commented on the look on my face when I took the last shot,” Adkins said. “I was very nervous, but, with my training with Erin (Gestl), I was confident enough to take good shots.”

Tom Venesky: Legislators continue to silence Pennsylvania hunters, anglers

For more than a year, a bill that would give sportsmen and women a voice in selecting who represents them on the Pennsylvania Game and Fish & Boat Commission boards has sat silent in committee.
House Bill 1508 would put the process of selecting commissioners in the hands of hunters and anglers by allowing sportsmen’s groups within a district where a commissioner’s term is soon to expire to nominate candidates for the position. Licensed hunters, trappers and anglers within the district would then vote for the candidates, and the top three vote-getters would be forwarded to the governor, who picks one for the appointment.

Deer camp to-dos: Getting things ready for opening day can be time well spent together

As the sweltering, sweat-inducing days of summer begin to fade and fall slowly creeps closer and closer, it is that time of year when many deer hunting camps schedule their annual work weekends, in preparation for the opening of the deer season.
Thankfully, it’s also the time when the weather cools, discouraging those pesky, blood-sucking gnats, black flies, and mosquitoes from becoming a nuisance, making a day outdoors enjoyable. It’s a good time to grapple with those outdoor chores that need attention. And what better chores are there to tackle in the fall than those to be shared and completed with friends and family at hunting camp.

New INHS scientist focused on hunter research across Illinois

Lauren Dean joined the Illinois Natural History Survey on July 1 as an assistant research scientist focused on hunter research for the Learn to Hunt program.
Dean received a B.A. degree in Anthropology from Tulane University in New Orleans, before completing an M.A. in History at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She recently completed an MPS in Wildlife Conservation and Management through Unity Environmental University’s Distance Education Program, where she conducted research focused on exploring waterfowl hunting regulation complexity as a constraint to adult novice waterfowl hunter recruitment and retention in Illinois.

Fishing tournament changes could be coming to Ohio in ’25

New regulations governing certain fishing tournaments in Ohio may be on the horizon if the Ohio Division of Wildlife gets its way.
Division of Wildlife Inland Fisheries Administrator Rich Zweifel told state wildlife council members in July the division will seek additions to the Ohio Administrative Code in the next year to officially define a fishing “tournament” – as opposed to a fishing “derby” or other similar activities.
