Anglers entering the Boundary Waters may want to pause to drop a line in Lake Isabella

As an entry point to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Lake Isabella has several interesting traits worth noting before you consider dropping a fishing line.
Due to the lake’s location within the BWCAW, anglers are required to obtain a day-use permit in order to fish it. Further, Isabella is a “non-motorized” lake, and it remains a scenic fishery, despite the visible remains of the 2011 Pagami Creek wildfire (three-quarters of the lake still doesn’t have mature trees around it).

Nature Smart: Stylized loon ‘gliding’

There are many things we don’t understand in nature. We often make assumptions about the kinds of behaviors we see or witness in nature, and we often incorrectly attribute a specific animal behavior based on what we humans would think in a given situation.
I was considering this one evening while leading a group of photographers to capture images of the common loon.

Backyard and Beyond: Photos of some backyard wonders

Isn’t this the truth: “It’s amazing the amount of wildlife you can see in your own backyard,” wrote Lew Troast Jr., after spotting a short-tailed shrew trying to drink from a birdbath sitting on the ground.
The little creature leaned over too far and fell into the water, but splashed out quickly.

Forest Service clarifies dog leash rule in Boundary Waters, lessening confusion on what’s allowed for hunters

On Wednesday, July 10, the U.S. Forest Service reiterated its rule regarding the enforcement of dogs on a 6-foot or shorter leash – except while actively hunting – in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
According to the agency’s July 10 press release, the rule has been in effect for national forests for years, but now it’ll be enforced in the BWCAW and Superior National Forest. Violators of the rule could be fined $50 or more.

Court rules that Wisconsin Republicans improperly blocked conservation work

The Wisconsin Legislature’s Republican-controlled budget committee can’t legally block conservation projects initiated by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ administration, the state Supreme Court ruled on July 5.
The decision marks a victory for Evers, whose relationship with Republican lawmakers has deteriorated since he took office in 2019.

States debate the credit card tracking of gun-related sales

Beginning July 1, a California law required credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard to provide banks with special retail codes that can be assigned to gun stores in order to track their sales.
But new laws will do the exact opposite in Georgia, Iowa, Tennessee, and Wyoming by banning the use of specific gun shop codes. The conflicting laws highlight what has quietly emerged as one of the nation’s newest gun policy debates, dividing state capitols along familiar partisan lines.
